Artist's Comments

In Guican in Columbia nothing much happens. The people lead simple lifes. It's a very sleepy little town. The politics in the area is another matter altogether though. It is a bit of a troubled area. When we were there half the population of the town must have been military but the presence of the paramilitary and the communist rebels is also there to be found. You can tell which group controls the area by the graffiti upon the walls. Not far from this scene was a wall with graffitti proclaiming the area belonging to the paramilitary and some locals warned us to be vigilant for the rebels as they regularly cross the mountains nearby. So saying though, we had no trouble whatsoever. It is most likely that the each group knew we were in the area as each group has informants somewhere in the area but none caused any trouble for us. The politics of the area was disrupted even more by oilpipe lines running a few hundred kilometres away. These pipelines were being bombed and you know who had just shipped in the special forces to train the soldiers and make sure the oil got through. The forests in the area are also home to an indigeanous race who were being forced out by the oil companies.

They were actually very friendly. The guys carrying the bazookas were much more impressive. They came and posed for us. After dark though they got a bit more paranoid but understandable so. :)

It still seems awfully scary to me, but I'm glad there's people like you to photograph events like this for those of us who wouldn't normally be able to see it, great job! :thanks:
